Today, Presa Canarios of all
sizes, shapes and colors can be found throughout the Canary Islands
employed as home, farm, and banana plantation guard dogs, hunting dogs,
and fighting dogs. Although dogfighting was prohibited in the islands in
1940, as it was in the United States in 1866, it has continued, although
now clandestinely, moreso in the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and
Fuerteventura than in Tenerife,
as it has throughout the United States, South America, Europe and Asia as
well.
As Manuel Curtò Gracia says, "The Presa Canario dog that does not truly guard, that does not truly defend, that does not truly attack when it is precise, is not a Presa Canario." Although neither Mr. Curto nor the author of this web site condone or in any way promote the fighting of dogs, the question remains as to how a dog with such a lack of fear and ferocious guarding and hunting abilities could have been arrived at by any other means.
