Given
the islands unique geographic position just off the northwest coast of
Africa, they were the stopping point for many travelers throughout the
centuries. It is believed, therefore, that as the English began to arrive
in the islands, they brought with them their passion for fighting dogs and
examples of the Bulldogs, Bullterriers, Mastiffs, and other English breeds
then available. The canarios, known for their love of the lucha canaria, a
sport similar to wrestling, fell in love with the sport of dog fighting
and began crossing their
dogs with any dog available which would seem
to
lend some advantage in the fight.
The dog breeders became experts at this and even today many a breeder prides himself on being able to guess what would be the perfect crossing to create the best possible dog for the fight. The canarios consider themselves "kings of the art of the cross" and think nothing of crossing dogs as diverse as the Neapolitan Mastiff, Bull Terrier, English Bulldog, English Mastiff, Dogue de Bordeux, Bullmastiff, American Pit Bull Terrier, etc. with their own Presa Canario.
